Working as a model in Taiwan: Taipei, agencies and visa
Taipei is a growing commercial and digital market. The visa by situation, the city's verified agencies, and a law that strictly caps agency fees.
by JC Billerey5 minTaipei is a growing commercial and digital market, driven by advertising and a strong influence scene. Before you apply, your starting point depends on your situation.
Two situations, two starting points
You already live in Taiwan
A Taiwanese citizen, or someone with a status that allows work: you apply to agencies directly, with no extra step. For you, what counts is choosing the agency and knowing your rights, covered below.
You are coming from abroad
To work in Taiwan, you need a work permit from the Ministry of Labor and the matching visa, set up by the agency or client that hires you. A tourist visa does not allow paid work.
Taipei, a growing digital market
Taipei focuses on advertising, commercial work and a lively influence scene. The market is younger than Tokyo's or Seoul's, but it is rising fast, driven by e-commerce and social media.
The Taipei agencies
I checked every agency I list in Taipei: Dolls Model Management, GGGG Agency and OVER:FACE Management.
The full list is on the page of verified agencies in Taipei.
Applying: what they look at
Where the agency offers an online form, you submit recent polaroids, unretouched, in daylight, with your measurements and date of birth. Otherwise you make contact via the details on its profile. No professional book at this stage. For a clean application, my free tools let you build a comp card and track your applications.
In Taiwan, the agency must be licensed and its fees are capped
Taiwanese law tightly governs the activity. The Employment Service Act requires a Ministry of Labor licence, and the fees an agency may charge are capped by official regulation, due only after a written contract and a service actually provided. An agency that was not commissioned may charge nothing.
An unlicensed agency, or one asking you for a book or a registration fee upfront outside this framework, is acting unlawfully. The other traps are in my piece on modeling red flags.
So your first move depends on your situation: already there, you apply directly; from abroad, sort out your work permit first, often through your mother agency. And in every case, no serious agency asks you for arbitrary fees to begin. The directory lists verified agencies only.
