Working as a model in Brazil: agencies, visa and scams
Brazil is a major source of models, but with no official agency licence. Working there or from abroad, the country's major agencies, and how to avoid the golpe do book.
by JC Billerey6 minBrazil is one of the world's great sources of modeling talent. The south, around Porto Alegre, has produced countless faces who went on to international careers, and São Paulo is the country's commercial heart. Before you apply, your starting point depends on your situation.
Two situations, two starting points
You already live in Brazil
A Brazilian citizen, or someone with the right to work there: you apply to agencies directly, with no immigration step. For you, what counts is choosing the agency and staying alert to scams, covered below.
You are coming from abroad
If you are not a resident, you need a Brazilian work visa to work, set up by the agency or client that hires you. A tourist visa does not let you work.
São Paulo, Belo Horizonte, Porto Alegre
São Paulo is the economic centre and the country's largest market, where advertising and the big agencies concentrate. Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre are scouting markets: southern Brazil in particular is known for spotting new faces before placing them in São Paulo and then abroad.
The major Brazilian agencies
I checked every agency I list. In São Paulo, among the best known: Way Model Management, Mega Model Brasil, Ford Models Brasil and Joy Management.
Several Brazilian networks are also present in the south: Ford Models has an office in Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre, and Mega Model is established there too.
The full lists are on the pages of verified agencies in São Paulo, Belo Horizonte and Porto Alegre.
Applying: what they look at
Where the agency offers an online form, you submit recent polaroids, unretouched, in daylight, with your measurements and date of birth. Otherwise you make contact via the details on its profile. No professional book at this stage.
If you are coming from abroad and an agency already represents you at home, your "mother agency" can arrange your placement in Brazil. For a clean application, my free tools let you build a comp card and track your applications.
In Brazil, no official licence, so double the vigilance
Unlike the UK or some US states, Brazil does not regulate modeling agencies through a dedicated licence. They fall under general labour law (the CLT) and the Consumer Protection Code (CDC), which bans abusive and misleading practices. Faced with the scale of the "golpe do book", several states and municipalities have passed laws banning agencies from requiring the purchase of a book, classes or photos as a condition of registration.
The absence of a public register makes your vigilance all the more important, but the test does not change: an agency charging you for a book, classes or fees to start is selling you a service, not representing you. The other traps are in my piece on modeling red flags.
So your first move depends on your situation: already there, you apply directly; from abroad, sort out your work visa first. And in every case, no serious agency makes you pay to begin. The directory lists verified agencies only.
