Working as a model in Italy: Milan, agencies and rights
Milan is one of fashion's four world capitals. Working as a model in Italy depending on your situation, the major Milan agencies, and a law that bars charging you.
by JC Billerey6 minMilan ranks among fashion's four great capitals, alongside Paris, London and New York, and it is the home of high fashion and the runway. It is also Italy's only real modeling market. Before you apply, your starting point depends on your situation.
Two situations, two starting points
You already live in Italy, or you are an EU citizen
A resident in Italy, or an EU national: free movement lets you work with no visa or permit. A French model in Milan is in the same position as an Italian one, you apply directly. For you, what counts is choosing the agency and knowing your rights, covered below.
You are coming from outside the EU
From outside the EU or EEA, you need a work authorisation to work in Italy, set up by the agency or client that hires you. A tourist stay does not let you work.
Milan, the world capital of fashion
Milan concentrates high fashion, the big houses and the Milan Fashion Week runways. The market is demanding and heavily runway-driven, but it is also a major development market where new faces get their start before going international.
The major Milan agencies
I checked every agency I list in Milan. Among the best known:
- Why Not Models, one of the city's long-standing agencies.
- Fashion Model Management and D'Management Group, two Milan benchmarks.
- The Italian offices of the international networks: Elite, IMG, Next, Select and Women Management.
The full list is on the page of verified agencies in Milan.
Applying: what they look at
You apply through the agency's online form: recent polaroids, unretouched, in daylight, with your measurements and date of birth. No professional book at this stage. As Milan is a runway market, physical criteria tend to be stricter than elsewhere.
If you are coming from abroad and an agency already represents you at home, your "mother agency" can arrange your placement in Milan. For a clean application, my free tools let you build a comp card and track your applications.
In Italy, the agency cannot charge you anything
Italian law is clear on this, and it protects you whatever your nationality. Legislative Decree 276/2003, the "Biagi law", governs labour intermediation: an agency must be authorised by the Ministry of Labour and listed on the official register (Albo), and its Article 11 forbids placing any charge on the worker. Italy also applies ILO Convention 181, which sets the service free of charge for the candidate.
An agency asking you for a book, classes or a registration fee to start is therefore breaking the law. The other traps are in my piece on modeling red flags.
So your first move depends on your situation: already here or an EU citizen, you apply directly; from outside the EU, sort out your work authorisation first. And in every case, no serious agency makes you pay to begin. The directory lists verified agencies only.
