• A registered business number and physical address that you can verify

How to contact a modeling agency: the right channels

Some agencies hold open days (usually announced on their Instagram). It's the chance to be seen in person, no middleman. Make sure the event is free: a paid open call is not an open call.

• Cold phone calls: they usually put the booker in a bad mood

A booker spends on average less than 20 seconds on each submission. Your file must be instantly readable, no heavy attachments, no busy layout. Here's the ideal structure.

Agencies want to see your body as it is, not a retouched editorial. The standard set is 5 to 8 photos: face portrait, three-quarter face, full length front, full length back, strict profile. No "I've always dreamed of", no long personal story, no pitch on why you'd be "perfect". The booker judges your look and your presentation, not your written motivation.

How to join a modeling agency after a positive reply

If an agency replies positively, they'll invite you to an in-person meeting (or a video call if you're far). It's the validation stage. What to prepare:

• A simple outfit: slim jeans or black shorts, fitted top, heels for women, white sneakers otherwise
• Bare face, hair down and clean
• Up-to-date measurements taken the day before
• A natural walk: you'll almost always be asked to walk
• Your questions about the contract, commission, exclusivity, development

If the agency offers to sign you, read the contract carefully before signing anything. Check the duration, territory, commission rate (often 20% agency side, 20% client side) and the exclusivity clause. When in doubt, take 48 hours to reread with a clear head. A good agency will always accept.

A clean, consistent Instagram

Scouts use Instagram massively to spot new profiles. You don't need 50,000 followers: a consistent feed, a few well-lit portraits in natural light, few filters, a clear bio with city and age, are more than enough. Avoid overly sexualised photos or club selfies, they close doors.

Physical events

Local photographers

How long before you get a reply

Lead times vary wildly. A Paris agency gets on average 50 to 300 applications per week. Expect 2 to 6 weeks for a reply, sometimes more. No reply after 6 weeks usually means an implicit no: better to apply elsewhere than to follow up. And a no is never final: you can try again in 6 months with fresher photos.
