Working as a model in Spain: agencies, rights and the free-of-charge rule
From Barcelona to Madrid, working as a model in Spain depending on your situation, the country's major agencies, and a law that bars any agency from charging you.
by JC Billerey6 minSpain, with Barcelona at the front, is one of European models' favourite destinations. Before you apply, your starting point depends on your situation, so let us begin there.
Two situations, two starting points
You already live in Spain, or you are an EU citizen
A resident in Spain, or a national of an EU country: thanks to free movement, you work in Spain with no visa or permit. A French model heading to Barcelona is in the same position as a Spanish one, you apply to agencies directly. For you, everything comes down to choosing the agency and knowing your rights, covered below.
You are coming from outside the EU
If you are not an EU or EEA national, you need a work authorisation to work in Spain. The agency or client that hires you handles this, and a tourist stay does not let you work.
Barcelona and Madrid, two complementary markets
Barcelona is the largest Spanish market in my directory, driven by advertising, e-commerce and the 080 Barcelona Fashion shows. It is also a strong development market, where new faces get their start. Madrid, set to the rhythm of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, leans more towards television, advertising and commercial work.
The major Spanish agencies
Several leading agencies operate out of Barcelona, and I checked each one. In Barcelona:
- View Management, Uno Models, Francina Models and Sight Management Studio, among the city's most established.
- Trend, Blow Models and Traffic Models, well placed in commercial and editorial.
- The international networks keep a Spanish office: Elite Spain and Ford Models Barcelona.
In Madrid, you will find NEXT Madrid, Men Model Management, The Tribe and Zeta Management, among others.
The full lists are on the pages of 32 verified agencies in Barcelona and 10 verified agencies in Madrid.
Applying: what they look at
You apply through the agency's online form. Recent polaroids, unretouched, in daylight, with your measurements and date of birth are enough; no professional book at this stage.
If you are coming from abroad and an agency already represents you at home, your "mother agency" can arrange your placement in Spain. To prepare a clean application, my free tools let you build a comp card and track your applications.
In Spain, the agency must be free for you
This is the most protective part of Spanish law, and it applies to everyone. The Employment Act 3/2023 requires placement agencies (agencias de colocación) to provide their service free of charge to the candidate: an agency cannot lawfully charge you anything to represent you or find you work. Spain also applies ILO Convention 181, which bars private agencies from charging workers.
An agency asking you for a book, classes or a registration fee to start is therefore outside the law. The other traps are in my piece on modeling red flags.
In the end, your first move depends on your situation: already here or an EU citizen, you apply directly; from outside the EU, sort out your work authorisation first. And in every case, no agency should make you pay. To contact verified agencies only, the directory is there.
